This image is loosely based on my maternal family story, in which, over a matter of decades, the town in which they lived (Altenwerder) was subsumed and developed by the Hamburg Port Authority. Visiting the area in 2015, I found the experience to be quite surreal; in amongst the the freight trucks, warehouses and port docks lay a lone church, in which my aunt is buried. Having a disjointed, distant (non) relationship with my German relatives, I create imaginary narratives to help feel a sense of connection with my familial past as well as explore juxtapositions with the inhumanities of the modern world.
